In short
A move within a building or campus is short in distance but needs the same planning as a move between cities: full packing, service elevator and route coordination, protecting the building and a plan for samples. The advantage is that it can be done in phases, so the lab hardly stops working.
Short distance, same planning
Even one floor up, an instrument moved without proper packing can be damaged entering the elevator or crossing a threshold. So every sensitive instrument is packed and secured as if it were going to another city.
Route and elevators
- Check the service elevator dimensions and weight limit.
- Measure doors, corridor corners and passages between buildings.
- Check floor load for heavy equipment in the new lab.
- Protect elevators, walls and floors along the route.
Moving between campus buildings
Between campus buildings we move by truck or a suitable vehicle, not on carts along the pavement. That protects equipment from shocks and sun, and the route does not depend on paths and steps. Campus entry and parking are arranged in advance with facilities and security.
Phased moves
- First, equipment and furniture not in daily use.
- Then instruments in groups, so there is always working equipment in one of the labs.
- Finally critical instruments, in the evening or at the weekend.
Freezers and samples
Even on a short move, the freezer is unplugged and moves separately. The safest option is to move critical samples on dry ice or in a backup freezer, rather than relying on the freezer staying cold on the way.
Customer responsibilities
Disconnecting and connecting gas, water and power, instrument calibration and biosafety cabinet certification are done by the customer's technicians or contractors. If needed, we are happy to refer you to a qualified technician we know.
